The UN Independent Expert on minority issues (IEMI), Ms Gay McDougall paid a visit to Hungary in late June 2006. The HHC met with the Independent Expert and presented a briefing paper on issues related to minority rights protection that fall under the HHC’s scope of activities.

The mandate of the IEMI was established to promote the implementation of the 1992 UN Declaration of the Rights of National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, and identify best practices and opportunities for technical cooperation by the OHCHR.

Following her visit, the Independent Expert made a statement about her visit to Hungary, noting progress as well as expressing concerns over serious discrimination and exclusion faced by Roma in Hungary.
