Joint third-party intervention at the ECtHR in GYLA and Others v. Georgia
Seven Hungarian civil society organisations submitted a third-party intervention to the European Court of Human Rights in the case of the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association and Others v. Georgia (Application no. 31069/24). The case was filed on behalf of 140 complainants following the adoption of Georgia’s Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence which infringes the rights of independent civil society organisations and private individuals.
The third-party intervention was submitted by the Clean Air Action Group, the Háttér Society, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, K-Monitor, the Ökotárs – Hungarian Environmental Partnership Foundation, the Power of Humanity Foundation, and Transparency International Hungary. In their submission, the Hungarian civil society organisations outlined the similarities between the Georgian law and the legislation previously enacted, as well as that currently tabled, in Hungary which restrict freedom of association. They also highlighted the wider context in which these laws were enacted and their negative impact on civil society, including stigmatisation and a considerable chilling effect.
