The Turning Point Project (2026–2027)

Hungary entered a new political era following the parliamentary elections in April 2026. After 16 years of democratic backsliding, the new government has committed to restoring the rule of law and rebuilding democratic institutions. While this creates a unique opportunity for positive change, the transition also presents significant challenges. Ensuring that reforms are transparent, respect fundamental rights and lead to lasting institutional change will require close public scrutiny and active civil society engagement.

Through the Turning Point Project, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee works to help ensure that this opportunity for democratic renewal is not missed. The project promotes the rule of law, safeguards fundamental rights and strengthens the resilience of Hungarian civil society during this critical period.

As part of the project, we monitor legal, institutional and policy developments affecting democracy, the rule of law and human rights, and assess whether reforms meet European standards. We share our findings with domestic and international audiences to encourage accountability and support meaningful reforms. Where necessary, we also provide legal assistance and pursue strategic litigation to protect those whose rights are violated.

The project also aims to strengthen cooperation among civil society organisations, independent media and activists. Through joint advocacy, knowledge-sharing and tailored capacity-building activities, we aim to work together to respond effectively to emerging challenges and make the most of opportunities to advance democratic reforms. Alongside this, we work to increase public understanding of the rule of law and fundamental rights through accessible communication and public engagement.

By documenting developments, supporting independent voices and promoting accountability, the Turning Point Project contributes to building a more resilient democracy where public institutions operate in accordance with the rule of law and respect for human rights.
