Finding our Local Powers – Apply to our autumn Human Rights Learning Lab!

Do you want to:
– get to know how democratic power functions at the local level and become an active member of your community?
– be a part of a diverse, young team of refugees, migrants and Hungarians?
– explore human rights issues faced by refugees in Budapest?
– learn about interactive drama methods and create an interactive theatre play together?

If yes, apply to the Hungarian Helsinki Committee’s Human Rights Learning Lab by 6 September!

What will we do?

  • We will explore how a cool municipality works in Budapest.
  • We will collect information about local human rights problems faced by refugees and foreigners living in Budapest.
  • We will turn these human rights problems into creative drama scenes with an exciting method called Forum Theatre.
  • We will invite locals to join us in finding powerful solutions to human rights problems during our performance.

How do we work with youth?

  • We work using the philosophy of critical pedagogy:
    • we respect youth;
    • we treat youth as experts;
    • and we allow youth to shape our programme.
  • We use human rights focused interactive, creative and experiential education and drama methods. So, we will count on your active participation!

What youth said about our activities:

  • “Genuinely the best course in my life! Communication is non-formal, but respectful, and the education process is 100% based on practice, instead of lectures.”
  • “The course was a very good experience for me. I have never met a group where the members were so open to refugees or foreigners. It is so cool to be a part of the teams and the workshops, because it is the participants, us who come up with ideas for our projects together with the mentors. New members don’t need to worry about not having experience because the mentors are there to help and they teach the things that participants need to know.”
  • “I liked the format of the course, when facilitators direct and combine educational and creative activities together. For me, this course is unique in terms of the material that is presented, and moreover, it is very important that we try to make our contribution in the form of social action to positive changes in society.”

When?

We will start on 17 September 2026 and have 12 weekly sessions. We will meet every week Thursday afternoon/evening, each session will be 2.5 hours long. (Exact times will be decided based on participant’s availability.) We will have our Forum Theatre performance in the beginning of December 2026.

Where?

Most of our sessions will be in our office in Budapest close to Arany János and Deák Ferenc tér metro stations: 1051 Budapest, Nádor utca 9.

Who can and how to apply?

  • We take applications from youth who are between 16-22 years of age.
  • Refugees, migrants and Hungarian youth are all welcome to apply.
  • Conversational English is required, because we will work in English.

The learning lab is free of charge for participants.

You can apply here!

We will select participants on a rolling basis. Application deadline: 11:59 PM, 6 September 2026
