The aim of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee’s project is to improve the quality of contact in prisons. The preservation of family ties is fundamental to the reintegration of prisoners, so it is not only in the interest of their loved ones, but also of the society.

To achieve this, we provide legal assistance to detainees’ relatives in front of two penitentiaries in Budapest and one in the countryside, as well as – for the first time in the country, by forming assistance  groups for detainees’ families – support them in being able to stand up for themselves and their loved ones. We strive to inform and sensitize the wider society and create opportunities for a long-term, self-organizing community.

The project runs from 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2025.

The project is funded by the ‘Our Union Values Programme’ (Közös Értékeink Program) of the European Union Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme (CERV). Please find more information about ‘Our Union Values Programme’’ here: www.kozosertekeink.hu. Other supporters: Ökotárs Alapítvány, Közösségfejlesztők Egyesülete, Autonómia Alapítvány and Kárpátok Alapítvány-Magyarország
