Engaging refugee and Hungarian youth through art therapy and human rights quizzes

The HHC organised an event for refugee and Hungarian youth, who are engaged and  interested in human rights activities. This 1-day event created a space for self-expression through art therapy with a refugee and a Hungarian artist, learning through human rights quizzes and bonding through games.

During the art therapy workshop participants dove into what values are important to them, what are the values they have in common and what shapes their identities. Following this discussion guided by a Hungarian art therapist, Júlia Silye, each participant got to create their own t-shirt design that would represent their identity with the guidance of a refugee artist, Abouzar Soltani. Abouzar’s unique calligraphy work was a great inspiration to many participants.

The participating youth also got the opportunity to learn more about human rights through informative quizzes developed by the HHC. These quizzes were aimed at raising awareness about certain topics and also allowed participants to learn more about their human rights in the Hungarian context. Following the quizzes, an engaging conversation developed about the information and topics they learned about while filling in the quizzes. HHC colleagues provided interesting insight into the work of the HHC with detainees and refugees.

The event served as an opportunity for refugee and Hungarian youth to work together, learn from each other, learn about human rights and other important social issues. The aim of these events are for youth to not only stand up for their own rights, but to become ambassadors among their peers to work towards a more inclusive Hungarian society.
