Safeguarding European Values: Supporting Rule of Law Restoration in Hungary (2026-2027)

The project aims to promote European fundamental values by supporting efforts in Hungary to restore the rule of law, democratic checks and balances, and human rights protections after years of systematic erosion. 

In the framework of the project, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee monitors and analyses legislative, institutional and policy reforms, assesses their compliance with EU law and international human rights standards, and advocates for reforms that lead to lasting democratic change. Through public communication, the project also raises awareness in Hungary of the importance of European fundamental values and strong democratic institutions. 

At the European level, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee brings Hungarian civil society perspectives into key EU processes, including the European Commission’s annual Rule of Law Report and discussions on the EU’s next long-term budget, while sharing lessons from Hungary’s democratic transition with European audiences.
