Hungary: Recent legal amendments further destroy access to protection
Recognised refugees are potentially forced to homelessness and destitution 30 days after status recognition, as all integration support is cancelled and access to state-run health care is curbed. Asylum-seeking children are deprived of school enrollment subsidies. Authorities are officially authorised to push back from Hungarian territory to behind the Serbian-Hungarian border fence persons with international protection needs, without registration. The Hungarian Helsinki Committee’s brief information update summarises the legal amendments recently enacted in Hungary, following the politically motivated dismantling of the national asylum system, in violation of international standards.
