The project carried out from the grant awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland under the EU Enlargement and European Fundamental Values Fund (EEFV Fund) aims to promote European fundamental values, the rule of law, and democratic checks and balances by maintaining international attention on rule of law backsliding in Hungary, and by positively re-framing domestic public discourse on the rule of law and checks and balances.

Project activities include:

  • monitoring and reporting, including a joint stakeholder contribution by Hungarian civil society organisations to the European Commission’s 2025 Rule of Law Report;
  • producing a gap-filling mapping paper on the problems of Hungarian law-making processes in light of the requirements to make such processes open, inclusive and consultative;
  • domestic public communication efforts, with an emphasis on visual materials, aimed at raising awareness to rule of law deficiencies in Hungary, and, at the same time, providing a positive vision on how a state based on the rule of law and European values should function; and
  • international advocacy activities on rule of law backsliding in Hungary.

Project period: 16 July 2024 – 16 May 2025
