András Kádár is the Co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee (HHC), overseeing the organisation’s strategic litigation activities in the fields of criminal justice, law enforcement and the rule of law. He worked as an attorney at law for 20 years until 2023, and in this capacity, provided legal representation before domestic and international forums, including the European Court of Human Rights, in several leading human rights cases. In addition to his involvement in HHC’s litigation work, he has also been responsible for the organisation’s various advocacy activities, research projects and trainings in the areas of the rule of law, criminal justice, law enforcement and non-discrimination. In 2008-2014, he was one of the six members of the Independent Police Complaints Board, the Hungarian Parliament’s civilian oversight body adjudicating complaints of fundamental rights violations by the police. In 2009-2010, he served on the Equal Treatment Advisory Board, the body assisting the work of Hungary’s equality body with legal advice. At present, he is one of the two Hungarian members of the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination.
He holds the Vambery Award of the Hungarian Society of Criminology (2023) for work in the area of criminal justice and human rights protection; the Hungarian Pro Bono Award (2014) of the Hungarian Bar Association and PILnet Global Network for Public Interest Law for pro bono legal assistance, and the “For Human Rights” Award (2002) of the Hungarian Ministry of Justice for outstanding human rights work.
